Asia De Cuba

Cuisine: , | Featured in Hottest Newcomers, Restaurant, Reviews

I don’t know about you, but boy am I glad to see Chino Latino Asia De Cuba move back into town… into the space that formerly housed Butter, nonetheless.  Their savory-sweet Crispy Calamari and Banana Salad is back and just as good as I remembered it.  And so are a few other signatures, like the Tuna Tartare and the Crab Dumplings, though much of the menu has been reinvented by Cuban native, chef Luis Pous, who made a splash at Little Palm Island with his Cuban-cum-French cooking. At Asia De Cuba, Puis is trying his hand at a fusion of Latin and Asian cuisines, dreaming up Black Bean & Plantain Empanadas, Shrimp Churros, and Barrio Chino Steak.  There’s a slew of tasty Ceviches, including a beautifully balanced Scallop ceviche with grapefruit and pork cracklings, and supremely fresh ribbons of Fluke...

First Bite of Italian Revamp – Contrada

Cuisine: , | Featured in First Bite, Restaurant Spotting

Calliope in the East Village was quite well liked; earning high praise from the New Yorker, as well as a starred review from Pete Wells in the New York Times. So you can imagine how jelly donuts I was to hear about the new French marketplace that is Le District all the way down in Battery Park…

Cuisine: | Featured in Chef Q&A

David Standridge, the former chef at the West Village’s Market Table, might not have been the obvious choice to head up the kitchen at the new, health and wellness-focused Café Clover, which features dishes like Ivory Lentil Risotto, Cauliflower “Steak” Romesco, and Quinoa Tagliatelle with beet greens. “At Market Table, I was bringing in 300-pound pigs a week,” he laughs…

World of Beer is a Suds-Lovers Dream Come True

Cuisine: | Featured in Drink Spotting, Restaurant Spotting

There’s no doubt that cider is on a serious upswing, especially considering the recent launch of Wassail, which is dedicated to the fermented apple beverage. But that doesn’t mean that beer is losing any ground as an increasingly respected wine alternative, and World of Beer — an upcoming, 5,000-square foot temple of suds — only cements its supremacy…
