  • Air’s Champagne Parlor is All About the Bubbly

Air’s Champagne Parlor is All About the Bubbly

Beer, wine and even cider bars abound in NYC, but Air’s Champagne Parlor is one of the few area drinkeries devoted to bubbly. To be fair, the Riddling Widow briefly preceded it, but owner Ariel Arce was actually beverage director during its tenure, as well as Birds & Bubbles before that, and Chicago’s Pops for Champagne (not to mention Grant Achatz’s exclusive, original The Office) before that.  Meaning her reputation as queen of Cuvèe absolutely proceeds her.

New York’s Best Tacos

Posted on Jul 18, 2012 in Best Of

It used to be that Mexican food in New York ranked far below any you’d get on the West Coast. Despite what your friends in California might say, the city’s Mexican has come a long way, especially in the taco department.

Q&A with Ember Room’s Ian Charlermkittichai

Posted on Jul 16, 2012 in Chef Q&A, Chef Q&A Recipes

Not many chefs start there culinary career pushing a food cart through the streets of Bangkok, but “Ian Kittichai” Chalermkittichai isn’t your average chef.   He has bragging rights to multiple restaurants around the globe, cookbooks, and as a permanent Iron Chef on Iron Chef Thailand.  And that barely scratches the surface. Chef Ian Kittichai didn’t start out with dreams of chef stardom, in fact, being a chef was the last thing he wanted as a child.  Despite aspirations...

Curly French Fries at Home

Posted on Jul 13, 2012 in Gizmo Girl

“Curly fries, or regular?”  Whether it was at a fast food joint or a 24-hour diner, we’ve all been asked.  There’s something about the deep-fried, spiral potato that makes it just a little more fun to eat than a regular french fry.  Don’t get us wrong: We love straight fries, but it’s good to change things up and why should we only get to eat them when we’re dining out? The Curly Fry Cutter from Sur La Table can...

Posted on Jul 12, 2012 in All Things Wine, Best Of

Summer’s here and the warm weather seems to stir up different boozy cravings in all of us. Some revel in six-packs at backyard barbeques while others prefer dark air-conditioned bars where the tequila flows like water. But for us, summer is all about wine.

New York’s Best Chilled Soups

Posted on Jul 9, 2012 in Best Of, Soups

Who says you have to give up soup come summertime? Perhaps one of the most versatile, cross-cultural dishes, soup is a year round staple.  Countries like Thailand and Vietnam actually eat hot, spicy soups to counteract the sweltering heat.  We see summer as an opportunity to seize the tasty spectrum of cold soups from around the world.

Green Garlic on the Rise

Posted on Jul 5, 2012 in Trendwatch

It’s easy to overlook garlic. It’s bulbous and overly familiar, that big fat white bulb that’s found pretty much everywhere and in everything. It lends the same old flavor to tomato sauce and chicken alike. Not to mention the odors it leaves on your hands and breath. But not all garlic is alike. The garlic we all know has a smaller, sweeter cousin that’s subtle and fresh called green garlic.  This immature garlic has a lot more texture and...

Smokehouse BBQ At Home

Posted on Jul 4, 2012 in Gizmo Girl

Summer is without a doubt high barbecue season, and while we obviously love all of the bbq joints New York has to offer, sometimes our smoked favorites are served best at home.  And not everyone can grill in their backyard or even have a backyard, for that matter. As any aficionado can tell you, barbecue isn’t just about brushing some sauce or a dry rub on ribs and calling it a day.  True barbecue has deep flavor that can...

The City’s Great Cheese Chase

The thing about cheese is that it just keeps getting better. Once upon a time you had to go to Italy if you wanted fresh, homemade mozzarella. Nowadays, restaurants and shops are spinning their own freshly mozzarella. They’re buying domestic and aging cheese in-house, not to mention the incredible selection of cheeses from all over the world.

Dish Spotting: Little Muenster’s Oaxaca Grilled Cheese

Posted on Jun 25, 2012 in Dish Spotting

Many food forecasters have said the grilled cheese is the “It” sandwich for 2012, and some even say it will overtake the burger.  We’re not sure it could ever trump the burger trend, but we have noticed grilled cheese trucks, grilled cheese shops and food carts popping around New York.  Chefs are dreaming up innovative and artisanal renditions with everything from 12-hour braised pulled pork to tuna on all sorts of bread, including biscuits. I don’t know about you,...

Best Hot Dogs In Town

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 in Best Of

We promised more hot dogs and we’ve got some doozies.   There’s plenty of franks to keep us busy well through fall.  One of our favorite shrines, Bark Hot Dogs (474 Bergen Street, Brooklyn), takes every aspect of the hot dog seriously.  That means oak barrel-aged sauerkraut, homemade pickles and heirloom baked beans toppings.  If that doesn’t have your attention, their beef-and-pork frank should.  Bark’s sausages are all made at Hartman’s upstate and basted in smoked lard butter before meeting their griddled fate....

Best Hot Dogs in Town

Like so many iconic American foods, the hot dog has a special place in the heart of New Yorkers. From the ballpark frank at Yankee Stadium to the food carts that line the city streets, the hot dog is a tried-and-true New York classic. And it’s come a long long way since Nathan’s Famous started its business back in 1916 with a small hot dog stand in Coney Island. The quest to be the proud server of ‘New York’s...

Dish Spotting: Tsushima’s Omakase

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but there are a few, precious restaurants you don’t want to share in fear you’ll never get a table again after you do.   But I’ll risk it because good sushi spots in New York are hard to find and I’ve discovered a sleeper sushi counter right in midtown.  Tsushima isn’t a new restaurant per se, but it’s new to me, though I’m not quite sure how I missed...

Hester Street Nights – Turning Up the Heat on Street Food

Posted on Jun 15, 2012 in Eating Events

Food fairs are popping up everywhere these days and we say the more the merrier. In our opinion, the next best thing to a great meal at a restaurant is an equally great meal at summer street festival where you get to sample the best of several talents in one foul swoop instead of investing your appetite in one restaurant with just one chef.
