Leave Room for Dessert During Citymeals on Wheels “Sweet September”

CfNjMToUIAEOaI0.jpg-smallSeptember can feel like one long end-of-summer bummer, so why not lift your spirits with a liberal dose of sugar?  Especially since Citymeals on Wheels’ “Sweet September” promotion is back for another season; with 100% of proceeds from designated desserts (at participating shops and restaurants such as Aureole and Jacques Torres) going towards feeding the homebound elderly.  So here’s just a small taste of where you can gorge for a good cause this month, from Huertas, which will donate $1 from every purchase of their chocolate-dipped churros, to the 21 Club; where $2 from their edible train cake goes directly to charity!

21 Club ($2): So busy scouting out NYC’s newest, hottest restaurants that this Prohibition-era icon fell entirely off your radar?  Crafted by talented pastry chef Ikuma Motoki, their ’21’ Express (an entirely edible choo-choo!) is as Instagram-worthy a dessert as Taiwanese rolled ice cream, Hong Kong waffle cones, or chompchomprev-6-webanything by Dominique Ansel.

Charlie Palmer Steak ($1): This isn’t your average breakfast pastry.  Refined enough to cap off Charlie Palmer’s tasting menu, the brown sugar-filled and cream cheese-iced buns are served warm in a cast iron pan, topped with a scoop of cinnamon-infused ice cream.

Chomp Chomp ($1): You’ll have a slew of sweet options at Simpson Wong’s Asian hawker food-inspired Chomp Chomp, including Goreng Pisang (Indonesian banana fritters), Bo Bo Cha (a Malaysian dessert soup with taro squares and yam) and Pandan Coconut Flan.

baked-alaska-dbgb.0Colonie ($1): This community-minded Brooklyn restaurant is doing its part by sharing proceeds from slabs of Sticky Date Cake, accented with Salted Crème Fraiche Gelato.

DBGB ($1): It doesn’t get more classic than DBGB’s towering Baked Alaska; a sugary pyramid of raspberry sorbet and pistachio and vanilla ice creams blanketed in meringue, and flambéed tableside with kirsch.

Huertas ($1): After grazing on chicken croquetas and stuffed piquillo peppers, end a pintxos fest at Huertas with Churros y Chocolate; sugared, deep-fried donut twists, dipped in a supremely decadent sauce.

IMG_15Red Rooster ($1): Now that you have free reign to indulge your sweet tooth, might as well go over the top with Red Rooster’s Supa Sundae; berries & cream, rocky road and vanilla mascarpone ice creams with caramelized bananas and roasted cherry sauce.

Rotisserie Georgette ($1): Rotisserie G’s raison d’être may be burnished, spit-roasted chicken, but it’s become equally known for its elegant Tarte Tatin for Two; delivered with clouds of whipped cream scooped from a little silver pail.

Sugar Couture ($1): Get a jumpstart on autumn with Pumpkin Brown Butter Cream Cheese Whoopie Pies, from Williamsburg’s extravagant Sugar Couture.

food2Zabar’s ($1): Not all Sweet September promotions require committing to a sit-down dinner; simply grab one of Zabar’s loaves of Chocolate and Cinnamon Babka to-go; for a feel-good sugar rush all week long.
