Our Favorite Fall Dishes in NYC
October may have remained warmer than expected for longer than expected, but there’s no doubt about it — fall is here in force. Which is why you’re way more likely to spot pumpkin, apple, and grapes on restaurant menus than tomatoes, basil and corn, and we’ve rounded up some of the tastiest autumn-centric dishes, at places like Jonathan Waxman’s Jams, Rebelle, The Pines and more.
Jams
In addition to career-making favorites like Pancakes with smoked salmon and corn sauce and a legendary Roast Chicken moistened with tarragon butter, Jonathan Waxman’s reboot of his seminal, 1980’s era restaurant is currently offering autumn-inspired dishes, such as a greenmarket-sourced Vegetable Plate with pine nuts and apple cider vinegar, Risotto with wild mushrooms and arugula pesto, Steak with marinated peppers, bone marrow and purslane, and a warm Apple Napoleon, from pastry chef Heather Miller.

Tucked into Chelsea’s Eventi Hotel, this rustic Italian-bent American brasserie from Laurent Tourondel references both his childhood growing up in the European countryside, and a career spent reimagining American classics. Which currently translates to globes of Burrata slicked with balsamic caramelized onions and fresh shavings of truffle, Roasted Pear and Prosciutto piled on gorgonzola toast, a Brussels Sprout and Salsify Salad strewn with hazelnuts and pancetta, and hand-formed Ravioli, filled with butternut and kabocha squash.

Forget your preconceived notions of vegan and vegetarian cuisine — Ravi DeRossi’s upscale East Village eatery hardly serves rabbit food. Think a hearty Kale Panzanella, tossed with silky cloves of garlic and warm croutons, thick pipes of Potato Cannelloni, wrapped around pine nut ricotta and eggplant “merguez,” and nutty Farro Risotto, dotted with bits of baked apple and butternut squash.

It’s a relief that Shanna Pacifico decided to remain in Brooklyn after all, following the unexpected shutter of Pacifico’s Fine Foods. And this time, she’s teamed up with industry mainstay, Josh Cohen, to bring her seasonal, Brazilian-inflected cuisine to Greenpoint, represented in dishes like Crispy Maitake Mushrooms with sunchokes and farofa crumbs, Roasted Delicata Squash with green romesco and pumpkin seed, and Clam and Pork Pozole, thick with hominy and avocado crema.

This brand new Greenpoint spot from the team behind Brooklyn favorite, Rucola, is every bit as seasonally focused as its little sibling. Which is why its opening menu includes fall-appropriate takes on French-Catalonian fare, including Curried Cauliflower with coriander, Fried Brussels Sprouts with maple and cider vinegar, Pumpkin Crostino with spicy honey, and Pan Roasted Chicken with braised kale and celery root.
