Where to Celebrate NYC Beer Week 2014
We celebrated cider four months ago, and now it’s time to pay homage to that other fermented beverage, which is well on its way to becoming just as universally respected as wine. Beer!
New York City Beer Week is back for its sixth year, promoting local breweries and beers. If you’re still drinking Corona and Coors light, this is the week to expand your horizons and drink local. Didn’t know the Bronx boasted breweries? Yep, and they’re damn good, too. So what does Beer Week mean for us? Think a string of exciting, suds-focused events taking place from now until March 2nd — from a “Meet the Brewers” Dinner at Hearth and a multi-stop brewery tour with Urban Oyster to a special, end-of-the-month “Girls Pint Out” fundraiser at the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg!

Marco Canora’s James Beard Award-nominated Hearth is also holding a “Meet the Brewers” Beer Dinner on Wednesday at 7pm. Enjoy a four-course menu and nine-beer pairing curated by Beer Director David Flaherty, along with a presentation and Q&A with brewers from Perennial Artisan Ales in Saint Louis, Greenport Harbor Brewing from upstate New York, and the Rockaway Brewing Company in Queens. At only $99, this boozy event is a total steal.

Unfortunately, this massive New York outpost of the famed German biergarten wasn’t able to open in time for Oktoberfest this year. But they’re making up for it during Beer Week with a special Dark Hefeweizen that they’ve brewed up just for the occasion. There will be plenty of Bavarian snacks, like soft pretzels and sausages, and if you share a picture of yourself dressed up in a dirndl or lederhosen on Paulaner’s Instagram page, you’ll enjoy a .3L stein of beer on the house!

Brew and barbecue is a marriage made in heaven, so count on the smoked meat mavens at Fette Sau to do it up for Beer Week. It’s estimated that females make up only 29% of the craft beer industry. Well, national nonprofit Girls Pint Out is attempting to change that with a series of edgy, educational events. Make Beer Week last until the end of the month by attending their ladies-only celebration at Brooklyn Brewery, which showcases women from several New York microbrewers like Sixpoint, Kelso, Moustache and more. Need even more incentive? Proceeds from the $35 admission fee go towards the organization Hollaback! which is celebrating its 8th year of fighting street harassment.
