The problem with having great food all over New York is that it becomes all too easy to never leave your neighborhood. With two bustling locations on the Upper West Side, Flor De Mayo is clearly beloved by its neighbors. If you don’t live on the Upper West Side, you’re missing out on some seriously good Chinese-Peruvian cooking. This Chino-Latino joint has been serving crowd-pleasing dishes for more than 30 years. The menu is eclectic to say the least: There’s a Ceviche Mixto alongside seven varieties of Chop Suey, Lo Mein and Chow Mein. Did we mention the shredded beef with yellow rice? No need to choose sides when you can dabble in both country’s cuisines. We recommend the Lomo Saltado, a traditional Peruvian beef dish with Asian inflections of soy sauce and vinegar, and our favorite, Pollo a la Brasa, Peruvian rotisserie chicken with “secret spices.” Generous, wallet-friendly portions allow room in your budget for Peruvian beer, sangria (heavy on the liquor!), or a signature fruity cocktail.
