Where to Dine During New York Restaurant Week, Summer 2015
Consider this your perfect excuse to dine out without compunction, and as often as possible, for the next 14 days or so. Because in addition to French Restaurant Week (which we profiled in a recent post), the big daddy of them all, New York Restaurant Week, debuts this coming Monday as well, running from July 20th-August 14th. And far from being a showcase for exclusively budget establishments, the cut-priced promotion has attracted participation from some of the best chefs in New York — we’re talking $25, three-course lunches and $38 suppers from the likes of Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Daniel Boulud, Michael White and Andrew Carmellini!
Bar Boulud
Dinner at a Daniel Boulud restaurant for $38? Yes, please! It’s hard to believe you can try dishes, like a Duo of Charcuterie (pork rillette and veal terrine) for that price, as well as Brown Butter Skate Grenobloise and Coupe Chocolat Malt, comprised of layers of praline ganache and chocolate malt ice cream.

Expect a seriously seasonal summer menu at Andrew Carmellini’s hotel stunner, Little Park, with a choice between Onion Tart with herbs or Burrata paired with heirloom tomatoes and strawberries, Pasta with sungold marinara and zucchini or Steak with charred leeks, and Blueberry Cake with sweet corn ice cream or Peach Sorbet.

Fronted by Noma co-founder, Mads Refslund, this is the closest you’ll get to the famed restaurant without travelling to Copenhagen. And the Restaurant Week menu isn’t any less inventive and quirky than the regular dinner offerings. In fact, you’ll find staples like Duck in a Jar, the Carrot & Caramel dessert (featuring veggie granita), and Chicken and Eggs; roasted breast meat, new potatoes and offal gravy, topped with poached eggs and served in a clay pot.

For a taste of high-end Mexican (for decidedly low-end prices), check out Alex Stupak’s convivial Empellon Cocina, for complimentary Pistachio Guacamole, and multiple options for each course. Think Lamb Tartare or Black Mole Squid to start, followed by Goat, Stewed Nopales or Fried Smelt Tacos, and Arroz con Leche or Chocolate Ganache with ice cream for dessert.

Jimmy Bradley may have shuttered The Harrison, but you can still experience his hallmark, rustic American cooking at The Red Cat in Chelsea and it’s just as good as ever. We’d go for the super summery Chilled Corn Soup followed by Atlantic Bluefish, and conclude with tart Buttermilk Panna Cotta.
